10th of October is World Mental Health Day! A time to focus on emotional well-being.

The 10th of October is World Mental Health Day, a time to spread awareness of emotional and mental well -being.

World Mental Health Day is an important event that happens annually in October. It is a day to recognise mental health issues and to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Mental health is a critical component of overall health and well-being, and it is just as important as physical health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that mental health “refers to a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.

There are numerous reasons why we should show awareness, as this can help to create a space for people to talk openly about their mental health issues, and to get the support they need. Showing awareness on World Mental Health Day can also help to inspire people to take action to improve their own mental health, and to get help if they need it. It can also help to reduce the stigma associated with mental health.

So next time you see your neighbour, ask them how they are going.

Sometimes a little gesture, no matter how small, can mean the world to someone. It doesn't need to cost anything, just a few minutes of your time

If you struggle in the morning with the stresses of getting the kids off to school and yourself off to work and with whatever else is on your mind, maybe set your alarm 10 minutes earlier. When the house is still asleep, have a cup of coffee and enjoy the silence with yourself. Try a 10 minute guided meditation, believe me, it will change your mornings!

My kids and I tried meditating on some mornings during the recent holidays. What can I say, my eldest fell asleep and my youngest, our wild Brumby, couldn't exactly sit still for long! However, I feel that giving them the right tools and knowing how to use them, is a good start in making sure our kids know strategies to cope with stress and anxiety. Meditation is definitely in my top ten!

Ten tips for mental and emotional well-being:

1. be physically active

2. eat well

3. get some sun and fresh air

4. be present in the moment

5. meditate

6. be social

7. practice gratitude

8. do something you enjoy

9. get enough sleep

10. ask for help when you need it

Mental health is a vital part of overall health and well-being and it is essential that we take care of ourselves and each other. World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of mental health, help reduce stigma, and provide support for those affected by mental health issues. It is important for individuals to take responsibility for their own mental health, and to reach out to friends and family for help if needed. Organisations can play an important role in providing resources and support for mental health issues, and by recognising this day, they can help to create a culture of acceptance and understanding. Mental health should be considered as important as physical health, and we all have the potential to make a difference in the lives of those affected by mental health issues.

Not only is it important to show awareness and understanding for mental health and well-being on World Mental Health Day, but of course on any other day too! Make sure to check in with yourself and your friends and family on a regular basis.
